Within a two weeks I developed a seroma. Mine is about the size of an egg. I had it drained by my doctor in June. It filled up again and more painful. I just had it drained again. This time I had the aspiration done using ultra-sound. The doctor said the fluid was very thick and she was unable to get very much of it out. My surgeon keeps telling me the fluid will eventually absorb into my body. Will this be possible with the fluid being so thick? The pain seems worse since they tried to drain it. What else can be done to relieve the pain.

Dear anonymous,

The drain volume is about 10-20 cc/day so I use cut up sanitary napkins to absorb the fluid. There is a hole in my chest which has healed open so that it is a permanent drain hole. I have consulted many doctors and a couple of plastic surgeons suggested moving either muscle or fat tissue into the seroma to see if it would heal. To last this long is a very rare happening. The fluid has been tested twice and there are no malignant cells.
