How do you choose a mastectomy bra?

Where do you even begin? Should you seek help locally in a store? Search google for a "breast cancer bra"? Speak to your hospital support nurse? Just buy something and hope for the best?

Many women find it a real struggle and a very intimidating process trying to get underwear that makes them feel comfortable, never mind human, after a mastectomy operation.

Marjory has written about her experiences with looking for a decent mastectomy bra elsewhere on the site - but we plan to build this page into a good resource for those starting out and facing up to the challenge for the first time.

We'll try to review various choices and will also explore issues around mastectomy bathing suits or swimwear. We'd also love to hear your own experiences and recommendations.

You might also find it helpful to read these articles on the site:

  • Marjory wrote about her experience with mastectomy drains shortly after her surgery ... in fact, she still had one of them in place when she was writing it !
  • Cording after mastectomy was also an early concern but luckily didn't ever develop into a serious problem
  • Then came a topic all too familiar to many women who've gone through a mastectomy operation - the dreaded seroma - with all the taps and draining that goes with it.

Browse around the site and you'll find lots more that should be helpful.
